To be honest, I was confused before the simulated work started as I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. But after we met online, I thought I completely understood what I was supposed to do. I really appreciate their work. They organized their files neatly. That’s something I am not very good at and I think I will learn from them.

After seeing their storyboard, I realized that this animation was a comedy. A boy and a girl get trapped in a malfunctioning lift, only to realise something strange is in there with them. Finally, a staff member found them and they thought they were safe, without realizing that a ghost was behind them. This is an interesting story and I fell in love with their style right away.
What excited me was that Xinyi told me in the first week that I could do the keyframe for shot 28, which is a scene where the girl and boy walk out of the lift, and I could start drawing posters inside the lift.
I thought that wouldn’t be a challenge for me.

However, when I started drawing the keyframes, I found it really hard. Since they did their sound design so well, I had to perfectly match the keyframes to the sound, which almost made me crazy. Luckily, after a few times trying, I got into the rhythm. So, when I finished my work and showed it to the Year 2 students, I felt very confident.
Then, Xinyi told me that my drawing should match the character design.

That’s when I realized that their character design was different from the storyboard. That’s a huge mistake. I should have checked their character design first before starting my work.

Fortunately, I am really good at painting, so I redid the keyframes quickly.

Finally, I imported my sketch into TVPaint, adjusted the brush settings, and then drew the final keyframe. And they told me that my work was great!
Then, moving into my comfort zone—painting—I started drawing posters inside the lift. Nina drew them in Photoshop, while I had never used Photoshop to draw before. Although I only had to color and outline the drawings because Nina had already done the sketching, it was still a challenging for me.

Luckily, Photoshop was not that difficult. I finished them smoothly, and I loved the feeling of learning something new! And I want to thank Chomma for teaching me how to use Photoshop, thank Xiaoqing for keeping me company while I worked on them, and thank Xinyi and Nina as well.
LET’S WATCH MY WORK!!!
